Men living with HIV

HIV & Healthy Eating ·

Good nutrition is very important for people with HIV, as it will help fight infection, keep a healthy immune system, build and maintain muscles and provide energy. However, eating patterns and abilities can be affected by symptoms of HIV and/or the side effects of medication. It is important, if you are experiencing symptoms or side effects, that you try to maintain a healthy weight and prevent weight loss. You should always seek medical advice if you are experiencing symptoms or side effects. However, listed below are some general tips for eating when you have symptoms:

Diarrhoea

  • Eat small, frequent meals and snacks and drink plenty of fluids such as water and rehydration drinks.
  • Limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink. Eat simple, starchy foods such as rice or mashed potato and avoid fatty food and high-fibre food such as salad.
  • Add a little salt to your food while the diarrhoea persists to combat that lost from the body.

Nausea, sickness, poor appetite

  • Eat small, frequent meals and snacks and plain foods such as bread or plain biscuits.
  • Avoid missing meals, as it may make nausea worse.
  • Ginger ale sipped slowly or ginger biscuits may help. So may mint or fennel tea.

Tiredness

  • Have quick and easy snacks, for example toast, jacket potatoes or ready-prepared meals if lacking the energy to cook.
  • Eat more complex carbohydrates to help with energy levels and drink fluids regularly.

Sore mouth

  • Try to avoid very salty and spicy food. Try softer foods that may be easier to eat.

  1. I really hope so – there are so many better alternatives to plastic bags – if I forget my reusable bags at the supermarket, I buy more reusable one, in an effort to remind myself next time!
