Recreational Drugs ·

Drugs are generally classed into 3 main categories:

  • uppers (also known as stimulants)
  • downers (also known as depressants)
  • hallucinogens.

Uppers

Uppers are drugs that affect the body’s central nervous system, generally making the user feel more alert and more energetic. Examples of uppers include cocaine, speed, methamphetamine (crystal) and ecstasy.

Downers

Downers, as you might expect, have the opposite effect to uppers and depress the central nervous system, slowing the body down. Their effect can range from a calming effect to that of unconsciousness and death. Examples of downers include heroin, valium and diazepam. Alcohol is also a downer in its mode of action.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens alter the way a person feels, sees, hears and smells things. The effect will vary according to their strength. Examples of hallucinogens include magic mushrooms and acid (LSD). Cannabis is a milder hallucinogen.
