Benefits of Exercise ·
If exercise was a pill, the drug companies would be fighting each other to sell it and you’d want to buy it. Nutrition and exercise enhance your quality of life and has a bearing on your results as they improve. The benefits of exercise include:
- decreased risk of coronary heart disease and type II diabetes
- decreased blood pressure
- improved non-infectious lung disease (eg, COPD, emphysema)
- decreased risk of developing certain cancers, eg, colon cancer
- improved appetite
- decreased weight
- stronger bones
- a slowing down or reversal of muscle wasting
- increased strength and joint stability
- increased mental wellbeing – increased self esteem, decreased anxiety and depression
- reduced stress and stress-related symptoms
- increased concentration
- improved sleep and sleep patterns and decreased fatigue
- improved cholesterol profile. Antiretroviral drugs can cause an increase in the amount of low-density lipoproteins in the blood (LDL – bad cholesterol), which can increase the risk of heart disease. Exercise increases the amount of high density lipoproteins (HDL – good cholesterol) in the blood.
