Men living with HIV

What does an HIV-positive test result mean? ·

  • It means that your blood contains antibodies to HIV. This means you are infected with HIV and that your body has ‘noticed’ the infection.
  • It doesn’t mean that you are necessarily ill at the moment. You may still feel very well.
  • It doesn’t mean that you will have to start treatment yet. That will depend upon the results of other tests, which help to assess how much your immune system has been affected by HIV.
  • It does mean that you are capable of infecting other people with HIV if you have unsafe sex or share needles with them.
  • However, it also means that now you know you have HIV, you can start taking and seeking the right kind of care to avoid getting sick.
