Access to Medical Records ·
Since the Data Protection Act 1998 people have the right to have access to the personal information held about them electronically to discover if the information stored is accurate.
However, medical records could be exempted from this Act if it is believed that either your, or another person’s, physical or mental health would suffer as a result of this information being released.
You have the right to see any report prepared for either an insurance company or an employer as long as you request, in writing, access to this report at the time you consented to it being prepared.
You have no right to demand an amendment to the report, but your doctor can, if willing, change the report at your request. If the doctor is unwilling to alter the report, you have a right to try and prevent the report being sent at all.
