Confidentiality - Medical Records ·
Doctors have a legal as well as an ethical duty to keep patient records confidential. This is regulatyed by the General Medical Council.
A doctor may, however, disclose if they feel that doing so will protect the patient or another from serious harm or death, providing they inform the patient first of their intent.
An example could be that a doctor may disclose to a positive person’s sexual partner if they thought that this person was at risk of becoming infected.
Remember that other agencies such as insurance companies and potential employers may be able to get access to your medical records, so you may want to limit the information contained.
