Men living with HIV

Why disclose? ·

Sometimes, telling others that you are HIV positive can make you feel less isolated and help you obtain the support and information you might require. This does depend on the kind of relationship you have with that person and the knowledge that he or she has about HIV.

“I think the biggest thing was telling people that I was positive. I think that was probably the biggest practical thing that I did, that enabled me to kind of move on.” – Jack

A few things to think about:

  • Why do you want to tell this person in particular?
  • Can you trust him or her not to tell anyone else?
  • Are there any benefits from disclosing? If so, what are they?
  • Will this person be strong enough to offer the support you require?
  • Are you strong enough to offer the support they might require?

“You have to weigh up who you’re going to tell and take advice.” – Terry
