Be prepared! ·
Remember, everyone is different and will have their own priorities, so it may be useful to write some of your questions down prior to your visit.
You don’t have to ask them all at once, especially as doctors often have limited time. Prioritise, and remember you can ask your doctor again on your next visit to explain something you didn’t understand the first time or may have forgotten.
Plus remember your local HIV support service can provide you with guidance about your healthcare options for your long term care and well being.
A good mnemonic (reminder) is to take PART:
- Prepare a written list of your main concerns or questions.
- Ask them in order of importance.
- Repeat back to the doctor what they say or recommend, to make sure you’ve understood.
- Take action: follow their treatment, referral or healthy-living recommendations and let them know if you have difficulties.
