Men living with HIV

Finances ·

The impact that working or studying can have on your finances can be a real worry.

Many people who have been living long term with HIV have reported being in a ‘benefits trap’. This is the situation whereby, because of the benefits you currently receive, you might actually be financially worse off if you return to work, even with such schemes as Disabled Person’s Tax Credit. However, few newly-diagnosed gay/bi men get access to benefits nowadays anyway simply because they have HIV.

Being uncertain about how long you’ll remain healthy and whether you’ll be able to return to incapacity benefits may also be a deterrent.

Having HIV is not a barrier to joining a pension scheme and you are unlikely to be asked for a medical or questionnaire to join.

Life insurance is problematic once diagnosed with HIV in the UK. Unless you already have life insurance, you will probably be unable to get cover. This situation may change; some companies are beginning to provide limited life cover polices.

There are no easy answers to any of the above. Everyone’s situation will be slightly different and HIV support agencies and welfare rights workers can help you explore the options available to you.
