Discrimination ·
The Disability Discrimination Act provides protection from being treated less favourably than others in the workplace because of your HIV status. It is not advised to go through this type of experience unsupported – contact advice and support services for guidance.
Discrimination can come in many forms:
- dismissal
- being overlooked for promotion
- being denied training opportunities
- failure to prevent harassment, such as bullying or name calling, which can isolate you and possibly lead to stress and depression.
Many positive gay men have experienced discrimination, but it can be sometimes difficult to provide evidence, so it can be useful to keep a diary of events with times, places and people involved plus physical evidence like emails. If you have evidence to support a complaint, it is easier for legal action to take place. This can be a difficult and emotional time. Don’t hesitate to seek professional support and advice to maintain your wellbeing – the people behaving in this way are the ones at fault, not you.
