Men living with HIV

Confidentiality ·

Confidentiality is a worry for many positive gay men at work.
It is your employer’s duty to protect your confidentiality at work, especially regarding personal health issues. If your personal information has been revealed, it is quite possible they may have acted in breach of the Data Protection Act.

This may mean you have the law on your side but your personal information has been made public and this information cannot be taken back. You should definitely seek professional advice and support on this issue.

“When first diagnosed I decided to tell a few people at work, thinking I wouldn’t be there much longer. But three years later I am still there and not had any feedback. Also to save my job I asked Staffing if they were bound by confidentiality before telling them anything.”

“Thinking about the environment I worked in, ie, stress, dirt etc, made me feel worse about working, but now even when I’m bruised or cut, I don’t think about it and I manage to get through my shifts without hassle and even manage to have a good laugh.”
