HIV and Travel ·
Sometimes the first thing you want to do when diagnosed with HIV is escape. It’s a natural reaction to run away when faced with something that changes your whole life, when you are still trying to come to terms with all the implications.
Sometimes you need to stay at home and face things. More often, though, a trip away could be the time out you need. Having HIV should not impose too many restrictions on your travel options, though you may need to do a little planning and research before you book your trip.
It could be visiting the family or friends, a fortnight in Spain or that trip of a lifetime round the world. So going away for the day, a weekend or even a month should not be a problem – anyone can have a health concern whilst they are away from home. It can be something common like an upset stomach or even a broken limb, so a little planning before you go can make your trip a little easier, especially when you need some assistance.
Here are a few of things you may need to find a little more about before you go:
- general health and medications
- travel restrictions for people with HIV
- personal safety and sexuality
- insurance
- vaccinations.
Do remember that other essential research, finding out where the local gay bars are, just in case you get that odd free chance to visit the local hotspot!
