The term AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This is the term used to describe the specific opportunistic infections and illness that occur as a result of a damaged or compromised immune system.
These infections are called opportunistic as they would normally be controlled by the immune system but because the immune system has been damaged they take the”opportunity “ to cause disease.
